Smoking on buses has been banned for years but when I get off a bus in Birmingham I usually smell like I’ve been at a night club. I love the idea of the ban in enclosed spaces but I sigh when I think that realistically its not going to work because it wont be enforced
You guys got any ideas how the government is going to enforce the law? And what we can do to help?
In the US it is a citizens enforcement, if someone lights up in a banned area, everyone in the building jumps on them…
whoever owns the building is liable for a £2000 fine i think if they allow people to smoke in their building. this should be enough to ensure owners of buildings enforce the smoking ban. to make sure this happens the government will be sending round inspectors. its a £50 fine is a person is caught smoking in an enclosed public space.
I don’t think they’ll ever really stop. People love to smoke. We can always hope but that’s about it. I don’t smoke and i haven’t been anywhere that doesn’t allow smoking. There’s always one booth or some area that’s for smokers.
I am a smoker but I always try to smoke in my garden and not subject others to my addiction. Like you I have been on a bus with my child and had the person sitting behind me blow smoke in my daughters direction . Yes i did have a word with them .
All I can see happening is more and more people will smoke in door ways and litter the pavements with cig butts as they is never enough cig bins in place.

You talk as though no other part of the UK has a smoking ban. In fact England is the last part of the UK to adopt it. The smoking ban is working better than could have been expected. The local councils employ special officials who can fine offending smokers and also very heavily fine the owner of the premises that the offence takes place on. Living in scotland where the ban has been in place for more than a year I can assure you it is extremely effective. You will see in due course!
Hi Oliver,
I smoke my little roll ups in my upstairs office, with the window open, and when out with the dog across the feilds, but I consider others who dissaprove, and would not smoke near them. A filthy habit, and I wish that I hadn’t started.
I shall happilly not smoke in enclosed public places, but I’m jiggered if I will be told off for walking down a beach with a lit ciggy.
What is the fine going to be for those that have a crafty smoke in the pub loo ?, and who will enforce it ?
This ruling will be fun !

The enforcement on the buses is down to the bus co.The inspectors have to put the people off the bus or the other passengers have to moan,On my local buses ,which are single deck,if someone smokes the driver pulls in at a stop and won’t go any further unless the cig is put out or the smoker gets off the bus.As regards pubs etc. the onus will be on the landlord or staff to control. If inspectors find evidence of smoking the landlord is held responsible so in turn he will take steps to make sure no one smokes or they will not get served,or perhaps thrown out.I can see a few rows and possible punch ups as a result of this. The government are crafty. They are making other people do the enforcing for them.I think you will find that public opinion and disapproval will make the majority of smokers abide by the rules,
